I just finished Morrowind and both expansions; some impressions from someone who played the newer games first

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:22 PM PST

    • The game is much better for for RP than the newer games; the more sophisticated stat and magic systems, the lack of fast-travel, even the dice-roll combat help with that. I felt surprisingly immersed in the game.

    • Magic is fucking awesome. You can make a nuke spell, fly around, teleport all over Vvardenfell, etc. Sure, Skyrim's magic is flashy (and not too bad, aside from the horrible scaling), but this has a lot more room for creativity. The abundance of reflect in the expansions was annoying, but I luckily also had melee skills.

    • The loot system is so much better than Skyrim or Oblivion; or even, most modern RPGs. Why is Diablo-style loot so common these days? Going into a random dungeon and finding a legendary item with unique effects is so, so much more satisfying compared to random, extremely common enchanted items anywhere. Sure, Skyrim and Oblivion had artifacts (and Oblivion wasn't as bad about this, except for the level scaling) and Morrowind also has random loot, but I felt the balance was much better here. Skyrim obsoletes all your looted gear with crafting (an idea Bethesda seems to have fallen in love with), which is honestly a lot less RP friendly.

    • The game is much more demanding on the player. You need to read a lot. Which I didn't mind, but I can see why Bethesda added quest markers for mass appeal.

    • They really nailed the atmosphere. The "Stranger in a Strange Land" style they were going for is pretty nice.

    • The quests were, aside from having to find the locations, pretty barebones. That's really one of the only things I think were improved in later games. Though the house/faction politics were actually pretty involved sometimes.

Overall, I think this is a pretty great game. I played parts of it 2 years ago but I bounced off of it and now I finished it in its entirety. I really enjoyed the main content; I played as a mage/warrior hybrid breton battlemage. The expansions I found somewhat weaker, though Solstheim was a nice throwback to Skyrim and the Clockwork city was really cool.

I definitely think this is now my favorite TES game, though I will say that I still thoroughly enjoyed Skyrim and Oblivion (though that one to a lesser extent). It's a bit bittersweet to think about that Bethesda will never make a game like this anymore though; if anything, their games are more and more in the direction of actions games, rather than RPGs. Oh well, it is what it is.

    Something I love about Morrowind

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:02 PM PST

The voice acting is incredible, breif, and varies greatly depending on who you're listening to.It's just enough to give you an idea of the characters voice and tone. The bulk of the dialogue is a wall of text to read at your own pace or skip entirely.

    Appreciation for Vanilla Players

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:07 PM PST

I just started Morrowind a few days ago. I had to turn down the difficulty a bit because I was dying so much. I have to say, I've died more in this game than any. I'm playing pretty much Vanilla with only a small handful of mods and this game is so hard! I've been caught more times and had to reload in the past three days than all my years in Oblivion and Skyrim together.

It's really challenging that I have to rely on potions so much. I never hardly took potions in Skyrim - they're an annoyance to me and I only used them to help out a little. But here, I'm playing a mage under the Atronach sign (no magicka regen) and it's a real stinker. I may have to make a new character because I'm used to playing a ranger. 😃 But I'm going to keep at it. I hate leaving caves undone but I've had to do that too. And I'll probably have to leave the kwama mining cave now because I'm out of magicka with no potions and no way to regenerate it.

It really is a real pain. And I'm having a lot of fun! It's slower going that Oblivion or Skyrim but that's okay.

It's really amazing to think how everyone played vanilla long ago, before mods, without much assistance and without UESP or search engines for clues and tips. You really have to learn how to play your game.

    Tamriel Rebuilt in VR

Was Morrowind originally meant to have more voice acting, or be fully voice acted?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:20 AM PST

I'm thinking about random quests where NPCs have spoken voice lines that are actually pertinent to the events of the quest, as opposed to the regular NPC greeting lines. Like the quest where you escort a woman into dwemer ruins so she can visit her revenge on an enemy, she actually says something to you after the enemy is killed. There is also the "No good deed goes unpunished, outlander" quest with the ring at the bottom of a pond. These quests give me the feeling that they were put together early in development, and perhaps they realized what a task it would be to fully voiceact everything.

Anyway, its just something that stuck out to me after years of play. Any thoughts? It would have been so cool if they acted out more lines in the game, I always loved the voice acting we get to hear.

How safe are storage containers in my stronghold?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST

I'm done with phase 2 of my Telvanni stronghold. I have some missions to do before I can build lvl 3.

I'm just wondering, if I dump a bunch of my artifacts I've collected in the chest in the main bedroom space of my phase 2 stronghold, will those items be preserved indefinitely, including through the phase 3 construction, whenever I get around to that?

Are all containers in strongholds safe storage? Crates? Chests? Sacks?

Suddenly can't talk to most NPCs after completing FG quest to Vas

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:57 PM PST

Basically the title. I play with Tamriel Rebuilt mods and the graphics extender. Everything was working completely fine but suddenly when I try to talk to most NPCs, the label will flash as I hit space bar, but no dialogue window appears. Any ideas?

I find the map to not be very helpful

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 02:32 PM PST

I find the map to be unhelpful while in dwemer ruins and caves. Does anyone know of a mod that makes the map better that is compatible with openmw. Preferably something that makes it more like the map from daggerfall.
