Is Morrowind still for me if I don't enjoy sandbox games?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 10:42 PM PDT

    Hello there!

I tried out Morrowind back in the mid 2000s when it was new, and while it seemed really deep and interesting I never quite got into it. I was in middle/high school at the time and I don't think I ever really got my head around the depth of the game, and I have a sense if I came back to it now my experience might be different.

The only other Elder Scrolls game I've played is Skyrim, which I put maybe 75~ hours into but ultimately lost interest in (never finished it) due to the dull main story, and all the other reasons people critique Skyrim. I had fun for a while, but overall the game felt shallow to me.

By contrast, other RPGs I've really enjoyed and completed include Gothic 1+2, all the old Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate 1+2, Planescape, Icewind Dale 1+2), and Pillars of Eternity 1+2. I liked the organic feel of the Gothic games and how rewarding exploration and character progression felt. In the IE games/PoE, I liked the story-driven nature and tactical combat and depth of character/party customization.

My understanding is that Morrowind has some of these elements but not all. I understand that creating a unique character and progressing from puny to powerful is a big part of the draw. And it seems that exploration is rewarding - like the Gothic games the world seems hand-crafted, which is great. But beyond that, as with Skyrim the main quest line doesn't really seem to be the primary reason why people play these games, if I'm not mistaken (I may be).

For me, I think story/quests are an important part of me to enjoy an RPG. But as a relative outsider to TES series, my impression is that story elements are secondary to why people like these games, and that the sandbox aspect is the bigger draw, of being able to become whoever you want and do whatever you want. That can be fun for me sometimes, but I need to have a REASON to want become powerful as a character - I don't enjoy just coming up with a character idea on my own and setting my own goals for the sake of it. I need to engage with a gameworld that gives me meaningful goals and reasons to care about them. With TES games I've more often felt like I get a short introduction and then I'm let loose without much guidance. It's not that I want hand-holding - I just need a motivation to engage with the world other than "you can".

Hopefully this all makes some sense. My understanding of Morrowind could be totally off-base and I'm happy to be corrected. Given all I've laid out here, is Morrowind a game I might enjoy, or am I better off looking elsewhere? You all seem like a thoughtful group of people, so thank you for any guidance.

    Cheers!

I’m looking for a mod that replaces the vanilla spell noises; any recommendations?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 11:33 PM PDT

I'm playing a pure mage on this play through, so I'm looking for something to make the magic feel a little more diverse. I'm particularly interested in new sound effects; something lore friendly would certainly be preferable, maybe something Oblivion-ish? Anyways, I'd really appreciate any advice/ recommendations!

Should I Worry About Efficiently Leveling My Character In My First Playthrough?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 03:13 AM PDT

I have played Morrowind sporadically but never really got deep into it and want to now. I know there is a way to efficiently level your character and I looked into it, but it seems like so much work and keeping track of which stats you've leveled and what they were before you leveled up and shit. Will not leveling efficiently impact my experience of the game?

Edit: Could I also just go to jail repeatedly to make my stats lower if I wanted to max out an attribute?

Thinking about reinstalling, any mod recommendations for enhanced, but still same experience as vanilla?

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 02:42 AM PDT

    Hey all!

Been thinking about re-installing the game ever since listening to some tracks from Young Scrolls and looking up Ordinator designs.

Are there any mods for enhancing the experience of vanilla GOTY Morrowind, while not changing the base gameplay outright? HD textures I guess are a must. Are there any good survival system (yes, I guess this WOULD change the gameplay a bit) and lore friendly extra content mods? Thanks!

    What builds work?

    Posted: 19 Oct 2020 05:29 PM PDT

I'm going to play morrowind for the first time. Usually, i play stealth characters or rogues in rpgs, but morrowind's gameplay makes me think it may not be the best course of action.

Is it possible for a total noob to make a successful stealth character? If not, what do you suggest?

Are mages easy enought to understand for a first playthrough? Give me advice i'm kinda lost.

Starting my first playthrough as a Dunmer mage, desperately need tips.

I joined house Telvanni, then the mages guild to buy the Levitate spell. I have no intention to do it's questline, though. I want to advance in the Telvanni before doing the main questline, maybe buy a slave. Along with spells, I use long blades, currently have a steel longsword and full chiton armor. Any ways I can get better or advance faster? I need 4 more points of magica before I can even cast levitate, which sucks.
