First play - 100 hours in! (and still more questions)

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:22 PM PDT

A continuation of my Redguard's adventure for my first play of Morrowind. Previous update: https://www.reddit.com/r/Morrowind/comments/fwjn2s/first_play_70_hours_in_and_more_questions/

After the 70 hour update I told myself I would keep updating every 10 hours (my original plan), but I've been caught up with some exploration and the time just slipped away from me.

My character is very overpowered. He is level 55 (all attributes maxed), with full (unenchanted) glass armour, constant enchantments to 218 strength, and daedric weapons. I'm currently using a daedric mace to work on blunt (only 55), which is enchanted to do +40-70 shock on strike. Short sword and long sword are both maxed already.

    Things that are going well:

    1. Quests. I've been mostly focused on the guilds (thief, fighter, mage). I should be near the end of all three. Gentlemen Redguard promised me guild leadership once I finish his quests, and I did all of the glove-wearing type quests already, so I am almost there. Two of the fighter guild captains have been turned as well, so I should have two more to turn to bring peace. The wizard quests have gone well, but I can't find the ashlander wise woman (the only one I met told me she'd never do it) for one quest and the stupid "what happened to the dwarves" quest. However I have the STAFF OF MAGNUS so I'm really psyched.

    2. Enchantment purchases. I have a decent set of jewelry, and now I am ready to start throwing grand soul gems at use items (for example, a jump/slowfall necklace would be nice since I'm always running out of mana). The weight problem has been solved so if I ever find daedric armour I will be able to wear it. My sword gives +100 agility on strike, so after the first hit I never miss.

    3. Money. I'm still rich, and I have a bunch of glass and ebony weapons to sell whenever I enchant something. I'm sitting on about $260k.

    4. Thief skills. Sneak is around 80, and security is at 100. No fetch quests can be slowed down by pesky guards.

    5. Spell-making. My favourite so far is 100 jump for 2 seconds.

Things that are not going well:

    1. Alchemy. I've given up on it.

    2. Imperial cult quests. I liked that they gave me some neat items, but I basically paid off one guy and finished all his quests and the other guy kept asking for alchemy trash.

    3. Find the shrines quest. I still haven't figured it out. I should probably re-read the book.

    4. A few other quests are stuck (besides the dwemer extinction and shrines), although I haven't put that much time into them. A ghost in an inn, a cursed invisible guy, finding Solzheim, and setting up an acting guild are part of my goals to figure out over the next while. No spoilers please!

    5. Lesser soul gems. Nothing seems to fit in them, so I'm using them to capture petty gem souls to slam into item recharging anyways. Did I mention enchantment was up to 70 now?

My goals for the next while are:

    • Finish the three guild series.

    • Finish the imperial cult quests... I guess?

    • I'd like to get blunt up to 100. Marksmanship too (currently it is 65), but less of a priority since it isn't part of my redguard's roleplay.

    • I hope to find some daedric armor, so I can start switching from light to heavy. Murdering someone who has the gear doesn't count of course.

    Questions:

    • If I progress the main quest (or any other quest lines), do I close off any other quests or content? Situations where characters are killed being the exception (I'm ignoring the Morag Tong for this reason).

    • My plan for enchanting is to spam constant fortify strength, along with a constant restore fatigue and heal, and slowfall 1 so I can keep on at it. For my weapon, I'll probably end up with the agility boost on strike plus some damage boost (shock). Any suggestions for what else to put in constant effect enchantments? I thought about going for protections (paralysis in particular) but everything seemed to cost too many points. Instead, strength gives more HP which means more survival, plus damage and carrying.

    • Any tips (no spoilers!) on getting more grand soul gems?

    • Some areas are easy to get to with various teleports, or using the giant bug things or boats (when I can find those). Is the remoteness of certain areas part of the game or am I missing something? I like flying around with my badass jump spell but some mountain ridges have been vexing.

    • I am hoarding any item that seems special or unique out of habit. I have a sixth house amulet, some enchanted shoes of st alms, robes of st moris, and a dozen +5 constant effect things (Sanguine). While I hopefully haven't sold anything, if I have does it permanently screw any main quests (no spoilers)? Is the fix it to find where I sold it and recover it?

Thank you for your support, I've put over 100 hours into a game that I am still loving and it is 100% because of the resources and help from this sub.

    Some Vivec navigation tips.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:55 AM PDT

Playing a Redoran Warrior character forced me to come up with new ways to traverse Vivec easily, since I can't just jump or levitate from canton to canton (what a quality of life downgrade coming from Telvanni). So here's what I've found and might help if you hate Vivec:

    • The gondolier in the arena canton is right in the middle of the city and transports you to the other cantons that aren't immediately next to the arena.

    • The Imperial trader in Caldera sells a ring of recall and the enchanter in Ald'ruhn sells scrolls of mark. If you're willing to sacrifice your mark or use a multiple marks mod then you can mark next to the gondolier that I mentioned.

    • Inside the cantons there are always 4 long hallways in the upper levels of their waistworks, they always lead right next to their canton's plaza.

    • Talking to people about Vivec and its cantons will mark all of them on your map. It doesn't matter if there's 9999 doors everywhere, so long as you guide yourself with the local and world map and refer to the cardinal directions, then you'll always know where to go even if you haven't memorized the map.

    • If you're using magic anyway, 50 jump is enough to hop from one canton to an adjacent one, if you stand on the edges.

    Help with running Morrowind!

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Greetings sera, I'm having some troubles.

Morrowind has just said "naw" and has decided not to run. I used to play it all the time, I had it on an old Toshiba laptop, then again on school laptops, and now, my very first laptop that's mine, a relatively new Dell that, for some reason or another, can not run Morrowind.

I downloaded Steam, downloaded MW, downloaded the Vortex manager and a few small mods from Nexus, and was ready to go, but when I hit launch, nothing. Steam launcher comes up, then goes away. It shows running for a second, then never even opens the startup screen. Nothing happens. I've tried to run as admin, everything. I got one small message when trying to open it from the folder, but that's it. I love Morrowind, and would love to be able to run it. Any help is appreciated y'all, thank you!

Also, I'm not particularly computer savvy, so please, explain like I'm five. Thank you!

Tips for returning to my all-time favorite game

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I spent countless hours of my childhood wandering the world of Vvardenfell on my original Xbox. Morrowind GOTY was my first open-world RPG, and it cemented my love of lore, exploration, and fantasy.

I just installed it on my laptop with some basic mods (MCP, MGE XE, Enhanced Textures, etc.) and played it for the first time in ages. I stole a platter, bought some gear, killed some bandits, stole a ring from a stump, and realized I had no idea what to do next.

What are some tips for how to get the most out of the early game (fun quests, good gear, etc.)?

How to play Morrowind in 2020? Some unanswered doubts.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:48 AM PDT

Hello there. So I'm not a gamer anymore (approaching my 30s) but I'm getting terribly bored in this quarantine. I was thinking about a nostalgia trip project: installing a really longevous videogame, and then maybe keep playing it every once in a blue moon after this whole situation comes to an end. The TES saga instantly came to mind, and I thought I might as well revisit Morrowind since everyone says it's the most wholesome TES and I think I never got to check it out properly.

The following are some doubts that even some heavy googling didn't clarify, so I thought I might as well post here and get some live feeback. I also read the stickies already. Pardon me if this has been over-questioned and feel free to direct me elsewhere if needed.

    1) Everyone raves about mods like it's compulsory to play this game modded. Is the vanilla version objectively so bad to play as of today, and in case why? Objectively, like performance wise: does it have any significant bugs on modern OSs that need fixing? Or are people just whining about the age old graphics and that's about it in the big picture?

    2) Speaking of mods. I'm not into the "nerd" mentality anymore, so I really don't want to waste hours carefully and tediously setting up and troubleshooting through a couple thousand single mod files. But I'd be glad to enjoy the game at its best potential, especially graphically, as much as it can be enjoyed to this day.

That means I'd happiliy go through a single pre-packed mod installer that runs like a breeze, or nada and I'll play vanilla. I don't care THAT much. Remember it's a once in a blue moon gaming thing and I don't want to waste more time setting up the game than playing it.

Speaking of "all-inclusive" installer-enabled mods. Everyone recommends Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 (MGSO), and everyone also hates it. So it a feasible mod, yes or no, and why? I'm confused. A lot of gaming YTers are using it as well so I can't understand all of the backlash. It does seem working.

Some questions: I heard that it's "outdated", but what does it even mean for a mod to be outdated? It's a mod. I'm not getting it.
I also heard it has some bugs, but which kind of bugs? Like severe "I can't even play the game / progress through the game the proper way" kind of bugs or marginal "the magical table spoon of Guthlabrob appears missing from original collectables" kind of bugs?

If MGSO is really not advisable, are there comparable prepacked mods to be installed comfortably and which ones would you suggest in case? Again, I'm not interested in minute details, and even if side quest #105859 gets broken I don't really care. I just want to casually play some 2020 Morrowind.
    ______

TL,DR: if Morrowind HAS to be played modded to enjoy it in 2020, please suggest the most complete, safe AND easy to setup mod. Thanks.

Alchemy Abuse/cheesing how much is too much?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:01 AM PDT

So I followed the directions for updating and patching/modding up to decent current play.

having a good bit of fun getting harassed by cliff racers and whatnot.

So I've gotten to where I can start cheesing on Alchemy, which brings me to my question on how others feel about this. I'm coming to play Morrowind again after a bout of No Mans Sky which has a couple different mechanics that can be utilized/abused a bit to give you money and large quantities of useful materials for basically no effort. use of this to SOME extent is rather standard in the more late game, as the difficulty for moneymaking WITHOUT using any of these mechanics is MASSIVELY harder.

so I'm trying to decide how much I feel the cheesing is too much or how much others feel might be too much. of course its REALLY just a "its your game play it how you want" sorta thing. but I am curious how others play this aspect of things.

I found at least with my current patching/mods/settings, it seems that the vendors that have restocking supplies of alchemy items can be sold those items back... and the items they are sold add to their refilling stock, which tops up every time their interface is loaded.
I don't remember how this originally worked as when I first played was forever ago and I definitely didn't play like I am now.

and to spell it out in case what I'm talking about isn't as well known as I assume:

specifically what I'm doing is particularly with that resocking merchant thing, at the Imperial Shrine guy in Sadrith Mora, repped up to 100, and fluffed their available items on Ash Yam and Netch Leather to 100+ of each. then can buy loads for less than 1g per piece. then make Intel potions, drink them, make more, drink those, ect until having thousands intelligence, making large strength and duration intelligence potions. .. or whatever other potions. like materials for Health regen and fatigue regen can be gotten similarly or made into a hybrid potion(s) that can also be made for like 3g in items. each. and then sold for hundreds of gold each. as well as being VERY useful in actual combat. and cheap.

do you do this? how much?
