Morrowind's similarities to Lord of Light

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:24 PM PST

I know that there are a ton of posts like this, Morrowind wide reaching influences from across fiction, but I just couldn't help myself posting the acute similarities I noticed between the game and Roger Zelazny's "Lord of Light" that I just finished this week. There will be light spoilers in this post, but none of the main plot beats, mostly setting.

No Spoiler Premise: On a planet in the far future, humans with incredibly powerful mutant powers and technology LARP as the Vedic pantheon and institute Hindu religion on a planet of medieval tech level humans ignorant of the nature of their "Gods." The main character, Mahasamatman, is one of the "Gods" and begins the story being brought back from a sort of death, (really Nirvana via projecting his consciousness into a gigantic magnetic cyber-cloud but thats neither here nor there) and he resumes his quest to use the teachings of Buddhism to combat the "Gods" authority. There is even a third party that is evil to both sides, Nirrti the Black, who is a "rogue God" raising an army of zombies to conquer the planet and institute his own belief system which he considers morally superior to that of the present one.

Now for some of the specific similarities I noticed, obviously there is a keen similarity between the nature of Gods in the setting, the Tribunal are no "true Gods" and neither are the ones in "Lord of Light", but that isn't really enough by itself to be a strong comparison. Where I see it though, is in the way the "Gods" act among their peers and themselves in the story, never really dropping the divine facade even in private. They always refer to each other by God-names and maintain a level of respect for the illusion which they share. These feels very "Tribunal" to me, particularly Sotha Sil commenting that the charade of godhood is important to Vivec and Almalexia and they find joy in it, and who is he to take that away?

Also in the matter of Sam (Mahasamatman AKA Buddha) he also uses the teachings of Buddhism to promote accelerationism, basically letting the people share in the technology that the Gods hoard. But he does not truly believe in Buddhism, nor does he think of himself as the actual Buddha at all, he separates the illusion and reality much more clearly than his peers. But at some point, a character comments that Sam has truly become what he pretended to be, and I was immediately reminded of the Nerevarine. We never truly know if we are the Nerevarine, if the prophecy had any power at all or whether we were just in the right place at the right time, and so "Lord of Light" leave you asking the same thing about Sam and his Buddha status.

Lastly, I'd say that "Lord of Light" cultivates a very strong religious/technological aesthetic that feels right at home in the baroque, weird world of Morrowind. The descriptions of buildings and their shapes, the armor and weapons of the gods, the emphasis on personal combat and honor in a world with superpowered technological (magical) artifacts, the intricate, religious inspired designs on high sci-fi tech and the coexistence of simple tea and oil lamps beside brain probes and machinery. I know Morrowind doesnt have a lot of explicit sci-fi things, but it certainly feels that way sometimes and absolutely cultivates an aesthetic of baroque science fiction heavily inspired by weird fantasy and mythology.

If this post hasn't communicated this already, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I read it cover to cover in less than a week and I plan to read it again soon. Totally captivating and highly imaginative, it was a joy to read and it gave me a new perspective on the kind of place Morrowind has is in the vast and uncertain world of fantasy fiction.

    MGSO + Tamriel Rebuilt

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:34 AM PST

    Hi,

Does anyone have experience adding TR to an MGSO install and save game?

I just wonder if the additional content will simply work without borking anything.

I know it's good practice to use other mods instead of MGSO these days, but it works fine for me and that is what my save game is based on, so I'd rather just continue with it.

How do I get the most out of Morrowind? Which mods, settings etc to enjoy the game for the first time in the modern day?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:09 AM PST

I'm looking to start Morrowind for the first time, I love Skyrim, but I'm not against the hardcore in depth mechanics I've heard Morrowind has, so what mods make this game playable today? Bug fixing mods, perhaps some higher resolution graphics, what issues with screen resolution/refresh rates that older games tend to have. Basically I just want to play Morrowind painlessly, no mouse acceleration nonsense, no game breaking bugs caused by progression of some random quest.

Beyond that I would like personal recommendations on what I should do to get the most out of the game. I've seen a couple different things like OpenMW and various mod lists but they were posted well over a year ago so the best choice might have changed.

    Thanks in advance.

Pro-tip : See those expensive prices enchanters charge you? Raising his disposition and your Mercantile skill can divide these by around 8.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:36 AM PST

I'm making an Excel sheet with character planner, spell maker, enchant maker and potion maker. And I even include base prices. I realise that raising disposition and more notably your Mercantile skill can drastically reduce the price, and make it go from 48 k (40 disposition and 5 Mercantile) to 5.7 k (100 disposition and 100 Mercantile).

So if you plan to have powerful constant enchantments and stuff, raising your Mercantile skill can really become useful.

PS : And let's also remind that Fatigue has an influence on absolutely everything, including enchanters' prices.

PS2 : Raising your Personality and Luck also have an lesser influence.

PS3 : It also works with spellmakers, in a lesser extent of course since making spells is much cheaper.

PS4 : Damn, that bot removing your post if you don't flair it is annoying.

The most underrated merchant of the game. He has 9000 golds, buys more stuff than the Creeper or the mudcrab, and is the master trainer of Mercantile.

Morrowind Retrospective (Video I found which I think deserves a little love :D)

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 07:47 AM PST

Hey, people of Reddit! So I'm gonna admit, I don't really post a lot so sorry if anything here is done wrong. I do, however, wish for you to check out this guy's video on Morrowind, it only has around 110 views for a video with such good quality. It's crazy to think this guy also has only 15 subscribers :/ So yeah please send this channel some love or something because he bloody deserves it.

    Lowered acrobatics skill

    Posted: 21 Dec 2019 03:41 PM PST

Hey all, got another question. I just made it to Solstheim, and have only fought a wolf and a spriggan. I noticed that my acrobatics has been lowered by 20, but I don't seem to have an active debuff in the active effects icons. I doesn't wear of either, what gives?
