A HEADS UP STARTING OUT GUIDE for those NEW to Morrowind -- (EXPERIENCED TRAVELERS: Feel free to add to this)

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:03 AM PST

I just wanted to begin a thread to include some "starting out" suggestions & tips to help NEW PLAYERS avoid screwing themselves over later on because they didn't know a few things starting out. This is that guide. If you are a seasoned traveler... feel free to add to this list.

    RACES:

-- DUNMER (Dark Elves) -- YES -- Dumner is a more flexible and thus more player-friendly
race. Morrowind has an incredible main quest that is very lore heavy and story rich. Playing as Dunmer REALLY makes this entire experience MUCH more believable, immersive & worthwhile. Playing as Dunmer will really make the main quest feel that much more special. But also keep in mind playing Dunmer yields nothing extra gameplay wise other races are equally valid and a fun experience. Lore wise: Dunmer feels a touch more intimate.

-- REDGUARD -- YES -- Redguards are incredibly gifted warriors. Combat-wise they have the best stats in the game. Also keep in mind that male stats are different than female stats.

-- BRETON -- YES -- Brentons are make incredible mages, Not only is their natural magicka bonus super helpful, their 50% resistance to magicka REALLY makes this race a powerhouse.

-- ALTMER (High Elves) -- NO -- Starting out Altmer is difficult because you have super low Strength/Endurance (i.e. starting Health) and Speed (i.e. ability to run away), and weaknesses to several types of magic during the entire game makes this a difficult option. Not the most idea for those just starting out.

-- KHAJIIT or ARGONIAN -- NO -- While a tempting option, not recommended choices for your first play through. If you're seeking the FULL Vvardenfell experience avoid selecting these races. In Morrowind beast races cannot wear ANY shoes or boots. Nor can they wear helmets (except open helmets which is hardly any) This SEVERLY restricts you from using some pretty awesome items. Not ideal for your first play through. Believe me. You'll want to be able to use "The Blinding Boots of Speed". And while an equally valid choice, as there is no wrong answer: Just be aware what you're signing up for. But in the end go with your intuition, if these races are calling your name: GO FOR IT! you'll have an incredible gameplay experience.

    BIRTH SIGNS:

-- Generally try to aim for signs that grant long-term benefits over short-term powers or spells. You can learn spells in game.

-- The Atronoch for MAGES -- NO -- As a mage character, while the 2.0 magicka multiplier is tempting. I would avoid this sign for your first play through. Having stunted magicka really interrupts the natural flow of game play. Basically unless you're planning on using exploits, (which is fine) such as making insanely powerful potions. If you decide to use the Atronach Sign, Shrines, including that rock in Maar Gan will give you full Magicka instantly every time you cast it. Using Ancestral Rings while using weak skills to provoke the ghosts also is great for the Atronach, even better to mix with a self heal enchantment afterwards to mend the minor damage caused. Honestly though I wouldn't recommend attempting a pure mage for your first play through. It is a lot of work.

-- The Atronoch for NON MAGES -- YES -- if you aren't concerned about magicka, the 50% spell absorption ALONE makes this a competitive choice.

-- The Lady -- YES -- A 50 point bonus is nothing to laugh at. Also the 25 points in endurance alone makes this a solid sign as endurance directly affects your amount of health and health gained per level. Getting high endurance is KEY if you want to maximize on health.

    CLASS / SKILL CHOICES:

-- Choose Custom Class if you want to MAXIMIZE your leveling & future gameplay experience. Just be prepared to do a little bit of research. A little heads up can go a long way.

-- Should you decide to not worry so much about skills & leveling and instead focus on pure roleplay. For a first playtrough a dunmer nightblade is great, since you experience combat, stealth and magic with it.

-- Choosing Combat as your specialization really helps you hit things & start off more smoothly in early game.

-- Having a Weapon and Armour skill as Majors for your very first character is extremely helpful. Even if they are a mage. At the very least, have a weapon skill as a Minor, so that you have a backup for times that your magicka has run dry.

-- BRIEFLY research the Morrowind Leveling system. Knowing the basics is helpful, but a deep dive is an ENTIRE discussion on its own & honestly IS NOT recommended, as focusing on all that tends to disrupt the experience.

-- The following skills are considered DIFFICULT to level: Security, Block, Speechcraft, Armorer, Mercantile, Enchant. - So HIGHLY consider using the major/minor skill bonus should your build use them. Due to the difficulty of leveling, the bonus will be VERY effective. (but also be aware how this affects leveling)

-- AT LEAST avoid putting unarmored, athletics or acrobatics, as either major or minor skills. The reason being is that in Morrowind its ONLY raising the major/minor skills that contributes to leveling up (for the most part). Having any of these 3 as your major/minor skills GREATLY takes away your ability to control leveling.

    PLAYER/SKILL LEVELING:

-- For your first play through don't worry much about leveling efficiently, just focus on the game. Don't you dare get out that spreadsheet! But knowing the basics of how leveling works is highly recommended. Just don't be over-calculating during play through, it ruins the game experience in my opinion.

-- FATIGUE -- Fatigue affects everything you do. Keeping your fatigue up is very important during the game. It increases the success rate of very many things. so keeping it max, especially before combat is key!

-- ENDURANCE -- Work on getting endurance high as fast as possible. it directly affects how much health per level is gained, the faster you raise this, the better off you'll be. Leveling your Spear skill is a great way to do this.

-- INTELLIGENCE -- For mage characters intelligence is equally as important to level early & quickly as it affects how much intelligence is gained per level.

-- LUCK -- Yes! luck affects EVERYTHING, (all the internal dice rolls, but not random loot). Putting 1 point in this every level is a generally a good idea.

-- HEAVY ARMOR -- YES -- Be aware that many of the best armors in the game are heavy armor. so if you never raise this skill you'll be missing out on a LOT later on.

-- LONG BLADE -- YES -- Be aware that many of the best weapons in the game are Long Blade. so if you never raise this skill you'll be missing out on a LOT later on.

-- ALTERATION -- YES -- Alteration is an alternative to security. Also MUCH easier to raise levels. When combined with using practice "1 second on self" spells, you'll be opening high level locks in no time.

SUGGESTED ITEMS THAT ARE EASY TO OBTAIN

(no spoilers, but looking these up is highly recommended) (feel free to add to this list)

-- Sword of White Woe: enchanted longblade up to 26 damage with drain health 1–10 points for 30 sec. (search balmora)

-- Search Balmora for a bunch of Soul gems just sitting on a desk. When you find them be creative as to how to go about obtaining them.

-- Keep your eye out in Balmora, certain traders have some great initial weapons and armor just sitting there in their back room.

-- Raid every crate in Balmora & sell it. The loot adds up.

--The Guild Storage chests (once you've joined them), and Various Cast When Used items from merchants in Balmora and Caldera. This includes Restore Health/Fatigue items (these are the most important), weapons, and various 'utility' jewellry (e.g. Amulet of Recall).

    SUGGESTED SPELLS:

(For your own sanity, find these spells. Also there are enchanted items with these effects that can be easily obtained, just know that acquiring these -whichever method you choose- is generally a good idea. To find these explore as much as you can of Balmora and Caldera, keeping an eye out for x Cast When Used items.

-- Mark: marks your place in the game world.

-- Recall: teleports you to the marked place.

-- Almsivi Intervention: teleports you to the nearest temple.

-- Divine Intervention: teleports you to the nearest imperial shrine (Sold at most Imperial Shrines)

    SUGGESTED MODS:

(The following are basic mods or utilities needed)

    -- 4GB Patch

    -- Morrowind Script Extender

    -- MGE XE

    -- Morrowind Code Patch

    -- Morrowind Optimization Patch

    -- Patch for Purists

    -- Official Mods Compilation

    -- Better Expansion Implementations

GENERAL TIPS: (feel free to add)

-- When you first begin, take precaution about entering the first dungeon you see ill prepared. After exploring Seyda Neen. Make your way to Balmora by taking the Silt Strider (which is is easier & faster) or be prepared for a journey that might take a while as a new player.

-- Be prepared to miss A LOT. practice your killing skills on Slaughterfish as you can easily run out of the water.

-- READ ALL DIALOG! Just do, it's worth it.

-- Use your journal to get to quest objectives easier, since you can re check the directions at any moment.

-- Don't join a great house until later. You'll want to know all about them before you join, since you can't join another once you join one. And you can't exit one either.

-- Joining Thieves and Fighters Guild is another part where you have to eventually choose.

-- Do things procedurally. Don't rush an entire questline or guild at once. Take your time to experience all of them, slowly.

-- Print the manual and map that came with the game. Both are very useful.

-- Raise your main weapon type to 30 - 40. If you don't you will be swing and miss & it'll get frustrating. in menu settings make sure "always use best attack" is turned on.

-- It can be rewarding to "Go hunting" out in the wilderness when you get a decent weapon, and decent hit rate, then going to dungeons later when your level is higher, and there's more great loot to be had.

-- Tombs with Daedra inside are often great for farming loot, cause of the weapons Dremora tend to drop, even at low levels so long as you can find a way to defeat them.

-- As a fighter bound Gauntlets enhance agility enhancing hit chance, bound shield enhances block chance, bound weapons enhance weapon skill, which altogether help a lot starting with lower combat skills.

-- As a mage "1 second on self" practice spells can make leveling magic skills a LOT faster. Just be aware of this option exists. Immersion-wise I wouldn't recommend constantly spell spamming, though it's useful to know how to raise some harder lesser used magic skills from such low levels where everything spell tends to fail.

-- Make a restore attributes, spell early on. Make it something like 1 sec for 10 seconds. Great way to come back from getting your attributes especially strength damaged. Just buy a spell that restores one attribute and you can make it with spellmaking.

-- Don't try enchanting with a low skill since you will always fail. For high level enchanting with expensive soul gems I recommend enchanters or fortify intelligence potions to make your odds of success better.

-- If you wanna get rich quick & sell items at full value to someone with LOTS OF AVAILABLE GOLD, learn where to find: The Mudcrab Merchant or Creeper.

-- That's all I can think of at the moment, But i'm sure my fellow Experienced Travelers will have some other GREAT suggestions.

    Crossbows Mod?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PST

I know there's this available but it doesn't really add them to the levelled list, and only adds Deadric to the CS. Is there something that adds some crossbows to the levelled list and encompasses all material types? (iron, steel, silver, dwemer, bonemold, glass, etc etc). Everywhere I look just says to use the one linked, or points me to ''Dwemer Rail Crossbows'' which I'm not a fan of.
